Learn more about the breed

History

The Belgian Malinois, first bred around the city of Malines in the northwestern region of Belgium, are one of four closely related breeds of Belgian herding dogs. Mals have long been acknowledged as a peerless livestock herder in their native land.

They were first bred by serious dog people who were primarily concerned with producing dogs of sterling working character and who spurned passing fads and fancies of pet owners. This emphasis on performance made the Mal the go-to dog for Belgian sheepherders and cattlemen.

Due to their extremely high work-drive they have been adopted by, and excelled in, working squads (such as K9 units ) across the world.

Personality

Belgian Malinois are some of the most sought after dogs for all kinds of physically demanding tasks. They're also very sensitive dogs that don't respond well to harsh training methods.

Malinois may be very difficult to train - largely due to their temparament - some of them are friendly and assertive, but others are reserved and aloof with strangers. They should never have a fearful or aggressive temperament, for which early socialization and training is absolutely essential - there is nothing more destructive than a bored, untrained Malinois.

While trained Malinois are quite good with children, their herding instincts may kick In causing them to nip at the children’s heels (specially if raised with them). They are not well suited for people who work long hours or those who must travel often, leaving their dogs at home.

Care

Because of their energy level and sensitivity, Belgian Malinois are recommended only for people who have previously owned dogs and have experience with dog training. They must be exercised for 2+ hours on a daily basis and due to their work-driven nature, the more occupied they are throughout the day, the better they will be around people and dogs alike.

With a smooth, short coat they do not require daily grooming - but are notorious shedders. If given the right time, instructions, and direction - they will be the ideal guard dog, scaring away intruders while being affectionate with family.

Why AWBI & KCI?

Importance of KCI

Also known as the Kennel Club of India, KCI is a professional body that maintains strict standards across various breeds of dogs across India. All KCI registered dogs come with a KCI registration certificate from the breeder, ensuring their pedigree. KCI representative may also visit the breeder at the time of whelping to ensure maintenance of breed standards.
As the only reputed governing body of dog breed standards, we always recommend getting a dog that has been registered through this organization in order to have clarity regarding their origin.

This does, however not ensure the conditions the pup was reared in or in what manner their parents might have been treated. This concern is what brings us to our next point: AWBI Certification

Significance of AWBI

The Animal Welfare Board of India requires that any individual selling any living dog must be registered with the animal welfare state board of their jurisdiction. In not doing so, both the buyer and seller are committing a crime.

Since this amendment was passed, it became illegal to buy / sell dogs without the breeder being the valid, original holder of an AWBI license. Apart from this judicial responsibility, AWBI also has strict guidelines regarding the conditions that the dogs must be kept in and the treatment provided to them. These guidelines make sure breeders follow responsible breeding practices  Due to these reasons, we strictly work only with AWBI registered breeders, and implore you to do the same.

How can you make a difference?

Ensure that you only work with AWBI registered breeders, and if you're looking for a purebred dog try to find one that is KCI registered. By forcing the breeders to obtain a license, we may finally put an end to puppy mills and unethical breeding practices.
