Learn more about the breed

History

One of four shepherd dog breeds that were developed in Belgium in the late 1800s is the Belgian Sheepdog. The four types are the Laekenois (fawn, rough coat), Tervuren (fawn-mahogany, long coat with black mask), Malinois (fawn-mahogany, short coat with black mask), and the Belgian Sheepdog, or Groenendael (black, long coat). With the exception of the Laekenois, all four kinds are recognised by the United Kennel Club (UKC) as a single breed in the U.S.

They pushed carts with ambulances and machine guns during World War I while also carrying messages. After the war, they were more well-liked in the country, and the Belgian Sheepdog Club of America was established in 1919. Their numbers were negatively impacted by the Great Depression, but they were used as fighting dogs in World War II, and since then, interest in them has progressively grown.

They currently place 122nd out of 155 breeds and variations recognised by the American Kennel Club and excel in canine performance sports.

Personality

Smart, brave, vigilant, and devoted to his family, the ideal Belgian Sheepdog is all of these things. When not in charge, he is said to be constantly moving. Though his herding ancestry makes him inherently wary of strangers, his observational skills make him an outstanding watchdog. His mistrust may turn violent if he isn't properly socialised and disciplined. A confident protector of his people and property, a well-socialized and trained Belgian Sheepdog won't attack without reason. With people he knows, especially family members, he is loving and cordial. Additionally, he is a time and attention hog. This breed like to be involved in family activities rather than being left alone. He needs a lot of mental stimulation during training and play, especially with puzzle toys like Buster Cubes and engaging games like fetch.

Care

The Belgian Sheepdog may live both inside and outside. He should reside indoors with the family, but he must have access to a yard that is completely enclosed to keep him from escaping and pursuing passing runners, cyclists, and cars. Gradually introduce exercise to puppies. Puppy kindergarten is a fantastic opportunity for puppies between the ages of 9 weeks and 4 months to obtain training, socialisation, and exercise. They also enjoy 15 to 20 minutes of playtime in the yard each morning and evening.

The Belgian Sheepdog is intelligent and very trainable, but he also has his own opinions. You'll need to gain his respect and trust without using physical force, threats, or other negative emotions in order to successfully train him. Despite his self-assurance and stamina, the Belgian Sheepdog is sensitive, and severe corrections have the potential to permanently alter his disposition. He functions best when there are clear, fair, constant standards and incentives for good behaviour.

Why AWBI & KCI?

Importance of KCI

Also known as the Kennel Club of India, KCI is a professional body that maintains strict standards across various breeds of dogs across India. All KCI registered dogs come with a KCI registration certificate from the breeder, ensuring their pedigree. KCI representative may also visit the breeder at the time of whelping to ensure maintenance of breed standards.
As the only reputed governing body of dog breed standards, we always recommend getting a dog that has been registered through this organization in order to have clarity regarding their origin.

This does, however not ensure the conditions the pup was reared in or in what manner their parents might have been treated. This concern is what brings us to our next point: AWBI Certification

Significance of AWBI

The Animal Welfare Board of India requires that any individual selling any living dog must be registered with the animal welfare state board of their jurisdiction. In not doing so, both the buyer and seller are committing a crime.

Since this amendment was passed, it became illegal to buy / sell dogs without the breeder being the valid, original holder of an AWBI license. Apart from this judicial responsibility, AWBI also has strict guidelines regarding the conditions that the dogs must be kept in and the treatment provided to them. These guidelines make sure breeders follow responsible breeding practices  Due to these reasons, we strictly work only with AWBI registered breeders, and implore you to do the same.

How can you make a difference?

Ensure that you only work with AWBI registered breeders, and if you're looking for a purebred dog try to find one that is KCI registered. By forcing the breeders to obtain a license, we may finally put an end to puppy mills and unethical breeding practices.
