Learn more about the breed

History

The Boxer’s ancestors, the war dogs of the Assyrian empire, go back as far as 2,500 B.C. Their closest direct ancestors are the German Bullenbeisser - descended from the Bulldog and Mastiffs, used for hunting large prey, and sporting a larger, heavier frame.

These dogs were the noble German’s prime big-game hunter, but with the downfall of the German nobles came the loss of the Bullenbeisser’s job; being given a new lease of life by farmers looking to protect their cattle from wildlife. By cross-breeding this ancient breed, the modern day boxer came to be - and with a smaller, sportier physique they were more suited to the labour required by their masters than their prehistoric ancestors.

Over the years, Boxers have done many jobs: athlete, cattle dog, police dog, war dog (in both world wars), watchdog, protection dog, and guide dog for the blind.

Personality

Alert, playful, and loving - the Boxer is an ideal guard dog for families. While they are playing around with you and your children, who they are known to be excellent around, their keen ear is constantly scanning for danger. Approaching any situation patience and caution, they are wary of strangers & overly affectionate with their loved ones. Only known to bear their teeth in self-defense, they have a great temperament as long as they are socialized, trained from an early age, and taught good canine manners.

Care

The beautiful short, smooth coat of the boxer requires minimal maintenance and doesn’t shed much hair either. Brushing them once every few days shall suffice, and keep them safe from mites of all types.

They are known to be heavy droolers, however, so don’t tease them with a treat unless you’re looking to take a slimy shower. Bred as working dogs, Boxer’s need a ton of stimulation mental & physical stimulation. The longer they are working, the happier they will be - and rest assured a bored boxer will turn the house upside down.

As extremely affectionate & sensitive dogs, Boxer’s don’t respond well to negative reinforcement and like to be part of all family events (often throwing tantrums to seek attention when feeling left out).

Why AWBI & KCI?

Importance of KCI

Also known as the Kennel Club of India, KCI is a professional body that maintains strict standards across various breeds of dogs across India. All KCI registered dogs come with a KCI registration certificate from the breeder, ensuring their pedigree. KCI representative may also visit the breeder at the time of whelping to ensure maintenance of breed standards.
As the only reputed governing body of dog breed standards, we always recommend getting a dog that has been registered through this organization in order to have clarity regarding their origin.

This does, however not ensure the conditions the pup was reared in or in what manner their parents might have been treated. This concern is what brings us to our next point: AWBI Certification

Significance of AWBI

The Animal Welfare Board of India requires that any individual selling any living dog must be registered with the animal welfare state board of their jurisdiction. In not doing so, both the buyer and seller are committing a crime.

Since this amendment was passed, it became illegal to buy / sell dogs without the breeder being the valid, original holder of an AWBI license. Apart from this judicial responsibility, AWBI also has strict guidelines regarding the conditions that the dogs must be kept in and the treatment provided to them. These guidelines make sure breeders follow responsible breeding practices  Due to these reasons, we strictly work only with AWBI registered breeders, and implore you to do the same.

How can you make a difference?

Ensure that you only work with AWBI registered breeders, and if you're looking for a purebred dog try to find one that is KCI registered. By forcing the breeders to obtain a license, we may finally put an end to puppy mills and unethical breeding practices.
