Learn more about the breed

History

In the mid-1800s, a toy-size Bulldog found favor in some English cities, including Nottingham, then a center for lace making. This was the height of the Industrial Revolution in England, and such “cottage industries” as lace making were increasingly threatened. Many in the lace trade relocated to northern France, and of course, they brought their toy Bulldogs with them. The little dogs became popular in the French countryside where lace makers settled, and were given the name Bouledogue Français.

The breed came to be associated with Paris café life, and with the bon vivants and fancy ladies who sought nocturnal pleasures in Parisian dancehalls, eventually spreading in popularity across the rest of Europe and North America.

Personality

Frenchies are free thinkers and are not an ideal breed for competing in obedience or agility. This maverick mindset can also lead to an obstinate nature, and if they decide to dig in their heels there is no budging them.

Notwithstanding their extremely playful and affectionate nature, socialization is a must for this breed as they tend to become overly possessive of their humans. Leaving these little devils alone is not a good idea, as they crave companionship and act out in isolation - fortunately they're small enough to fit in your purse.

Frenchies have big personalities and can need a fair amount of training to make them civilized companions. As mentioned above they are known to be stubborn, but at heart they're people pleasers and therefore easy to train.

Care

As long as they're well socialised and trained, Frenchies are great dogs for novice owners and fare well in apartments too. Being prone to obesity, it is imperative that you monitor your Frenchie's daily caloric intake carefully (specially keeping him away from any fatty food). A fairly laid back breed, as long as their diet is in check a daily walk would suffice.

While their coats are short and smooth making the need for grooming substancially less than most other breeds. Brushing them on a weekly basis would eliminate most of their shedding, keeping your house fur-free. Their nails need to be trimmed regularly as long nails may cause them pain.

Due to their flat face they often suffer from respiratory issues in hot and humid weather, due to which they require to be kept in an air conditioned area during the hot summer months.

Why AWBI & KCI?

Importance of KCI

Also known as the Kennel Club of India, KCI is a professional body that maintains strict standards across various breeds of dogs across India. All KCI registered dogs come with a KCI registration certificate from the breeder, ensuring their pedigree. KCI representative may also visit the breeder at the time of whelping to ensure maintenance of breed standards.
As the only reputed governing body of dog breed standards, we always recommend getting a dog that has been registered through this organization in order to have clarity regarding their origin.

This does, however not ensure the conditions the pup was reared in or in what manner their parents might have been treated. This concern is what brings us to our next point: AWBI Certification

Significance of AWBI

The Animal Welfare Board of India requires that any individual selling any living dog must be registered with the animal welfare state board of their jurisdiction. In not doing so, both the buyer and seller are committing a crime.

Since this amendment was passed, it became illegal to buy / sell dogs without the breeder being the valid, original holder of an AWBI license. Apart from this judicial responsibility, AWBI also has strict guidelines regarding the conditions that the dogs must be kept in and the treatment provided to them. These guidelines make sure breeders follow responsible breeding practices  Due to these reasons, we strictly work only with AWBI registered breeders, and implore you to do the same.

How can you make a difference?

Ensure that you only work with AWBI registered breeders, and if you're looking for a purebred dog try to find one that is KCI registered. By forcing the breeders to obtain a license, we may finally put an end to puppy mills and unethical breeding practices.
